Bibliotheca Chalcographica (1652-1669)

Bibliotheca Chalcographica, hoc est Virtute et eruditione clarorum Virorum Imagines [The Library of Copper Engravings, Being Portraits of Men Renowned for Virtues and Learning] is a nine-volume collection of engraved portraits of, mainly, Renaissance scholars (jurists, physicians, philosophers, theologians, etc.), published in Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Mein between 1652 and 1669. The project was initiated by Jean Jacques Boissard (1528-1602) who, assisted by engraver Theodor de Bry (1528-1598), published two volumes of Icones virorum illustrium doctrina et eruditione praestantium ad vivum effictae cum eorum vitis [Images of Men of Outstanding Knowledge and Deep Learning in Lively and Vivid Pictures] (1597-1598). These were followed with Parts 3 and 4 published by de Bry’s sons Johann Theodor de Bry (1561-1623) and Johann Israel de Bry (1570-1611) collaborating with Johann Adam Lonicer in 1598-1599. Subsequent volumes were the work of Sebastian Furck (Part 6, 1628), Johann Theodor de Bry’s son-in-law Klemens Ammon (Parts 7 and 8, 1650-1652) and Mathias van Somer (Part 9, 1664). Parts 1-7 were published again in 1669.
